An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. A film columnist for WAG Magazine, Sam's moviegoing expertise has been profiled in the New York Times and he was a featured guest on VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live.

Newly Minted Millionaires! Passaic County Lotto Players Win Big Two Passaic County lottery players are feeling like a million dollars. Their tickets matched all five white balls in the Friday, Oct. 6 Mega Millions drawing, winning $1 million. One of the tickets was purchased with the megaplier option, multiplying the prize to $3 million. The tickets were purchased at Jackpocket in Hewitt. A lottery ticket sold at Freedom News in Jersey City matched four of the white balls and the Gold Mega Ball, winning $10,000. The winning numbers were: 12, 24, 46, 57, and 66. The Gold Mega Ball was 22, and the Megaplier Multiplier was 03.

16-Year-Old Newark Teen Fatally Struck On Garden State Parkway: State Police A 16-year-old teenage boy from Newark was fatally struck on the Garden State Parkway in Irvington on Monday, Oct. 9, state police said. At 9:24 p.m., state troopers responded to the Garden State Parkway North 143C ramp, Detective Jeffrey Lebron said. An investigation revealed a vehicle was traveling northbound when the 16-year-old entered the roadway and was struck, suffering fatal injuries, Lebron said. The accident remains under investigation, Lebron said.

Irvington Shooting Victim Found Lying In Street: Maplewood Police A person who was shot in Irvington was found lying in the street in Maplewood on Monday, Oct. 9, Maplewood police said. At 2:11 p.m., police in Maplewood responded to Evelyn Court and found the victim, Maplewood Police Chief Albert Sally said. They were taken to a nearby hospital, Sally said. An investigation by Maplewood police determined the shooting occurred in Irvington and the Irvington Police Detective Bureau will be handling the investigation, Sally said. Anyone with information is asked to call Irvington Police at 973-399-6600.

Longtime Linden Police Officer Matthew Carew Dies: 'A Class Act' Matthew Carew, who served in the Linden Police Department for 40 years, died on Friday, Oct. 6 at the age of 70, the Linden Police Department announced. A Rahway resident, Carew started as a police officer the Keansburg Police Department before transferring to Linden, according to his obituary. He retired in 2014. Carew is survived by his wife, Rita, his children, Andrew and Christopher, his grandchildren, Mia, Ayva, Chloe and Riley and other relatives. Seen Them? Newark Police Seek Stove Thieves Newark Police are attempting to locate two suspects wanted for a burglary that occurred on Friday, Sept. 29. Between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., two men broke into a residence in the 100 block of Milford Avenue, using an object to damage the door frame leading to the home's basement, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. While You Were Sleeping: Burglars Break Into Verona Home: Police Verona Police are attempting to find two burglars who broke into a home on Sunday, Oct. 1 while residents were sleeping. At 4:30 a.m., two masked people wearing gloves entered the home via an unlocked door, police said. They left with a small carry bag that was inside the home, police said. They returned two minutes later and retrieved a backpack and then exited the home again, police said. Police believe they were searching for a key fob to the vehicle in the driveway but were unsuccessful. The occupants of the home were unaware of the break-in until later that morning.

$50K! North Jersey Powerball Players Win Big It was a lucrative Saturday for two North Jersey Powerball players. Two North Jersey lotto players, one in Essex County and one in Morris County, matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball drawn winning the $50,000 third-tier prize in the drawing held on Saturday, Oct. 7. Two Teens Arrested After Pursuit: Madison Police Two teenagers were arrested in Madison after they led police on a pursuit early Friday morning, Oct. 6, authorities said. Police observed a black 2016 Lexus sedan traveling on a dead-end street, committing several traffic violations near Park Lane, officers said.
